Women In Magick - Continuing The Legacy

Women In Magick - Continuing The Legacy

As we celebrated International Women’s Day last week, it is important to acknowledge the incredible contributions made by women to the world of magick and spirituality. From witches to healers, from authors to mystics, these women used their knowledge and intuition to connect with the Divine and harness the power of the universe. Their legacies continue to inspire seekers of all faiths and genders to this day.

Healers have played a vital role in the magickal realm, using their knowledge of plants and natural remedies to heal the sick. Hildegard von Bingen, a German abbess and herbalist who lived in the 12th century, believed that illness was caused by an imbalance in the body and used herbs, diet, and music to restore harmony. Her writings on natural medicine are still studied today, and she is recognised as a pioneer in the field of holistic healing.

Witches have been a source of fascination and fear for centuries, and despite the persecution they faced, many women embraced their magickal abilities and used them to help their communities. One such woman was the practitioner Marie Laveau, a Voodoo priestess who lived in New Orleans in the 19th century. She used her knowledge of herbs, roots, and spirits to help those in need, and is still revered today as a powerful spiritual figure.

Mystics, who used their intuition and spiritual connection to the universe to guide others, were another group of women who made significant contributions to the magickal realm. French philosopher Simone Weil wrote extensively on mysticism, social justice, and the nature of the Divine. Her works, such as Gravity and Grace and Waiting for God, continue to inspire seekers of all faiths.

Saint Teresa of Avila, a Spanish nun who lived in the 16th century, also had numerous mystical experiences, including visions of Christ and levitation, and wrote extensively about her spiritual journey. Her writings on prayer and contemplation are still revered today by Christians and non-Christians alike.

Ama Ata Aidoo is another woman who has made significant contributions to modern magick. Born in Ghana in 1942, Ama Ata Aidoo is an author, playwright and feminist who has explored themes of identity, tradition and empowerment in her work. Her writing often incorporates elements of African spirituality and mysticism, reflecting her belief in the interconnectedness of all things.

In more recent times, contemporary mystics like Marianne Williamson and Gabrielle Bernstein have continued the legacy of female mystics, using their intuition and spiritual connection to guide others on their paths of healing and personal growth. Marianne Williamson is an author and spiritual teacher who has written extensively about the power of love and forgiveness, while Gabrielle Bernstein is a motivational speaker and meditation teacher who has helped people connect with their inner guidance.

These are just a few examples of women who have used their intuition, knowledge, and spiritual connection to guide themselves and their communities, leaving a powerful legacy that continues to inspire and empower us today. Honouring the contributions of female mystics is not only important for recognising their legacies, but also for inspiring future generations of women to tap into their own intuition and spiritual connection. By uplifting the voices of these women and so many more, we can help to create a world that values and celebrates the unique gifts and perspectives of all people.

Take some time to celebrate the incredible women you follow or know personally, who have helped you paved the way for you in your magickal journey. Light a candle and take a moment to reflect on the power of the Divine Feminine. And remember, you don't have to be a famous mystic to tap into magick. With an open heart and an open mind, you can connect with the universe and harness its power. Here's to the women who have made the magickal realm so enchanting - may we continue to honour, celebrate and carry on their legacy for generations to come.
